Marco Sullivan Finishes 3rd at Wengen!

Nordica Athlete Marco Sullivan finshed 3rd this past weekend at the famous Wengen downhill course in Switerland.  Sullivan starting 10th in the order was just 2 tenths of a second behind Bode Miller (2nd) and 4 tenths behind race winner Didier Defago.

A guy with plenty of power was Sullivan, bolstered by the presence of a family dominated fan club. He won the first split at the top of the course and but for a couple of small mistakes might have won the day.

"They had a record attendance today (over 30,000) and my family is here," he said. "They've never seen me race in Europe before. There's lots of hype, I guess, but this morning I went out and free skied by myself. It's such a beautiful place, I checked out the Eiger and was looking around  - it's so beautiful here. I tried to make my family proud and it worked."

His coach might consider having the family shipped in everywhere, because he was sure impressed.

"Marco skied the top like an absolute stud," said head coach Sasha Rearick. "The first part of the course has some tough terrain and Marco skied aggressive, came out clean and aerodynamic, skied a great race. He lost a little time after that but it was an awesome race for him."

The coach said Sullivan has been skiing well all season, but that in Wengen he kept getting better in each training run, "It's great to see," Rearick said. "That's something he's been working on."

That's not the only thing he's been working on. "Things are coming together," said Sullivan.  "I've been skiing well, I've had a lot of fast sections in races but for one reason or another haven't been able to put it all together. Even today I had a couple of big mistakes. On such a long course it's sort of inevitable. I was really good up top, but then lost time just before the Hundschopf. I had a big mistake. Luckily, I was able to keep focus and charged the bottom. … I learned that about myself today, that not giving up even after that one big mistake can turn out really well."

He said he also learned the importance of conditioning, noting that his legs felt good during the last seconds of a two minute 30 second course.

NORDICA RETAINS CAST OF US SKI TEAM STUDS

West Lebanon, N.H., (July 28, 2008) - Nordica USA has re-signed US Ski Team Speed Aces, Scott Macartney, Marco Sullivan and TJ Lanning to an exclusive agreement for use of Nordica Skis and Boots through 2010.

Sullivan, 25, is coming off his career best season, which included a first place finish in the World Cup Chamonix Downhill, helping him end the season ranked fourth in World Cup Downhill standings. Macartney, 30, posted a career best Downhill result, placing third at the famous Val Gardena Downhill in Groden IT.  Lanning the youngest, 23, had an outstanding season including a tenth place finish in the Birds of Prey World Cup Super Combined, at Beaver Creek CO.

All three athletes have experienced career best results while on Nordica and have chosen to stay with the brand that has given them the product and support they need over the course of multiple World Cup seasons.

“When we signed Marco, and Scott we said Nordica would focus on developing fast speed skis and a boot which is unequaled.  I think we did that, and these guys left everything on the hill last season helping Nordica make true to our promise,” adds Matt Knittle, Nordica Promotions and Competition Manager.

With the continuation of Sullivan, Macartney, and Lanning, Nordica continues to be a leader of Alpine Skis and Boots used by the US Ski Team and US racing community.

“We have the athletes we want.  These men are a thrill to watch race and even better people to work with” said Andy Knittle Nordica USAPresident.

SULLIVAN WINS FAMED ARTIC MAN SKI AND SNO-GO CLASSIC

Hoodoo Mountains, AK - The U.S. Ski Team's Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) added another title to his resume earlier this month after he and Tyler Aklestad claimed victory in Alaska's famed Arctic Man Ski and Sno-Go Classic.

The Arctic Man opens with a downhill where a skier or snowboarder is intersected on course by a snowmobile. The pair link up in motion and the snowmobile tows the athlete through a canyon at speeds near 90 mph. Through the final leg, the skier lets go of the tow rope to rip across the finish line solo.

"It was a lot of fun to claim such a unique title," said Sullivan, "but for me the race is more about just completing it and having a great time. We practiced the towing section of the course for a few laps so we knew about the trouble sections, but in reality the sled driver is hammering as fast as he can go and he just has to trust that his skier is going to hold on."

Sullivan and Aklestad posted a winning time of 4:19.00 over the five and a half mile course which traverses a turny and extremely bumpy canyon trail. From the start, the course drops 1,700 feet to "hook-up" then climbs 1,200 feet to "release" before dropping 1,200 feet to the finish line.

ULLIVAN WINS CHAMONIX WORLD CUP DH

1/26/08- Marco Sullivan, the 27-year-old from Squaw Valley, won his first World Cup this Saturday in Chamonix. Sullivan blazed the downhill with a time of two minutes 0.11 seconds beating Swiss downhill World Cup leader Didier Cuche by .04 of a second. "This is crazy. I knew since Lake Louise I had a chance to go for victory and this was top of my list," said Sullivan. Sullivan's victory, following a second place at Lake Louise, highlights his best season to date. With a career that has been hampered by a succession of injuries, Sullivan’s hard work is finally paying off. "It's a great reward after being injured so many times. I really had to fight hard to make it back in the team,” Explained a delighted Sullivan, “This is absolutely huge."
