ALASKA - March 30, 2009 Nordica is off to a commanding start at the 2009 US National Championships in Alaska. After a long week of delays due to snow fog and a volcano, Marco Sullivan won his third DH title by a third of a second this past Saturday. "He skied really well, was aggressive off the the top and he has fast skis," said head coach Sasha Rearick. He also said there was one turn on the track, a sidehill turn, which Sullivan nailed, making the difference in the race. Nordica was also at the top of the Junior podium with J1 Jared Goldberg who finished 5th overall winning his first Junior National title.
On Sunday David Chodounsky battled the nations top SL skiers ending up on top.
After winning the first run, Jimmy Cochran could not hold on to the lead and his US Champion title from the previous year. Chodounsky laid down a second run that proved to be untouchable by the rest of the field. "He's been on our radar for a long time," said Rearick, "He has just always been on the wrong side of the criteria". Chodounsky, a Crested Butte, Colo., skier who has made his name as a member of the Dartmouth Ski Team. Having graduated, as captain, in 2008 Chodounsky spent this season looking to wrangle his way into national contention. At Alyeska, Sunday, he got there.
